Love and Fat-Free Cheese by Crissy Sharp

One of the benefits of post-surgical down-time, is the chance to sit and read. As much as I love a good book, life is typically so busy, the opportunity to curl up and digest a whole story in a day rarely happens for me... I am so glad I got to do just that with this debut novel from Crissy Sharp.

My Review:

I loved this book. From start to finish, Sharp created dynamic characters and an intriguing plot. Once I got into it, the story pulled me right along. There is a perfect balance of suspense and romance. How can you go wrong with cute, intelligent, kind leading men & a wiity, driven leading gal? This is a clean, cozy, and fun read.

About the book:

Fat-free cheese is okay--unless you've tasted real cheese. The same holds true with love, as Juliet discovers when she meets Owen Denny, the strikingly handsome CEO of The Bradley Corporation where Juliet now works. As Juliet is forced to decide whether or not to follow her heart, she's dragged into the mystery of the disappearance of her sister's fiancé and the pharmaceutical conspiracy he plans to reveal. Can she protect her loved ones without sacrificing her own heart?

About the author:

Crissy Sharp is an author, runner, and sports lover. She has a special knack for avoiding cooking and cleaning so she can focus on her true love: writing. She is in awe of people who can do a one-legged king pigeon without pulling something and detests everything about fat-free cheese. Though she’ll always be a Montana girl at heart, she also loves Tennessee, where she currently lives with her husband and three children.

To Suit a Suitor - by Paula Kremser

About the Book

Much to her mother’s annoyance, Julia North can’t catch a husband. After what seems like the hundredth lost suitor, Julia leaves London to visit a distant cousin, hoping to forget about husband hunting for a time. She inadvertently finds herself in the society of Henry Chamberlain, the most desirable gentleman in Somersetshire. With every young lady in town competing for his attention, Julia assumes she doesn’t have a chance. What she doesn’t know is that her desire to avoid Henry’s attention may be the very thing that catches it . . .

My Review

I don't often read regency, so this was a change of pace for me. I like strong, witty characters, and that's exactly what you get with Julia. She is charming and proper yet quirky and a definite spit-fire. Imagine the fun when she meets the equally clever - and remarkably handsome - Henry Chamberlain. Ms. Kremser has created a delightful tale of love lost and found. For a light-hearted regency read, give it a spin. Witty, charming, and just good clean romantic fun.

As fun as it was, I do feel that there was room for more thorough content editing. There was a lot of "telling" instead of "showing" which tends to make the story drag. There were also a few incidents where the same idea/concept/feeling was repeated multiple times within a chapter. Again, not a deal breaker, but it had a way of slowing down the pace.

About the Author

Paula Kremser focused on a career in science for a few years after graduating from Brigham Young University. Several years later when she moved with her young family to England, Paula seized the opportunity to focus on her love of the Regency Era. The enchantment of the aristocracy and the fascinating stories from every stately home she visits have been both research and inspiration for her first novel, Sophia. Paula lives with her husband and four children in a charming village nestled in the Chiltern hills in Buckinghamshire.

Bonded at Birth - An Adoptee's Search for Her Roots by Gloria Oren

Did you know that November is National Adoption Month? To help commemerate all the wonderful families of adoption (on both sides of the equation) I've been invited to participate in the book tour for Gloria Oren's newly released memoir: Bonded at Birth: An Adoptee's Search for Her Roots.

About the Book

(I took the following from Amazon:)

Gloria Oren’s adoption memoir Bonded at Birth: An Adoptee’s Search for Her Roots is a story of loss, survival, determination, and persistence. It covers one state, three countries, and two continents. It covers sixteen years of searching and a little over four decades since her first adoption. After growing up under the umbrella of secrecy, Gloria sets out to find her birth mother with all she knew about her: she was a Jewish teenager. Despite being told by anyone and everyone that it would be an impossible feat, her determination and motivation increased. Learning her birth father’s name upon reunion with her birth mother and a short time later that he passed away eight years before led to her getting involved in genealogy and through this research medium she discovered that her first cousin seven times removed was Col. William Prescott of the Battle of Bunker Hill fame and more. Seven years later her story is brought full circle.

Bonded at Birth will interest adult adoptees who wish to search but hesitate, adoptive parents confronted by their adopted child’s wish to search, and by birth parents who fear searching not wanting to intrude on their biological offspring’s life. It will attract memoir readers who enjoy a unique story. And couples contemplating adoption will learn the damage secrecy can lead to, and with hope, this book will ensure that they will be the ones to talk to their adopted children about their adoptions.

You can get a copy of Bonded at Birth in print or eBook through Amazon.

My Review

If you're looking for a well-written memoir, then this book is a good read. Oren provides a pleasant retelling of her experiences - covering the major incidents of her life from birth through adulthood. I enjoyed reading of her experiences as a Jewish child in Brooklyn and abroad. As a genealogy/family history nut, I enjoyed learning of the joy she continues to find through researching her roots.

Based on the description of this book, I went into it expecting a much fuller account of Oren's adoption and the journey of finding her birth family. I wanted to learn the details - the "story" as I like to call it - of her process. I wanted to feel her pain and re-live her journey of longing and searching and waiting for answers. What I found was more of a basic memoir with a side-note about adoption. (She didn't really recount much about the "search" until about 80% through the book.) I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just not what I expected. If I was an adoptee searching for my birth family, I think I would find great comfort in hearing how well she's integrated back into her birth family's life. However, if I was looking for tips or support or motivation as to where and how to look, I think I'd probably walk away wanting.

Take the Stairs - 7 Steps to Achieving True Success

This book rocked my world. Seriously, if you're looking for a kick in the pants, Mr. Vaden delivers!

In the process of trying to keep all my balls in the air, I feel like I have been in a constant state of falling short on my goals and running late on my to-do lists. When I stumbled on this book I knew I had to read it ASAP. But with a shed to finish and cold weather on the horizon, where was I going to find the time to sit and read? Lucky for me, I didn't have to. With a hammer in my hand and a tool belt on my waist, I plugged my earbuds in and listened to the audio.

The tips Mr. Vaden gives are brilliant! In fact, I loved this book so much I will be purchasing a print copy to love and mark-up, and share in discussion with my husband and our children. There is great value here for teenagers, young adults, and those of us who claim maturity. We plan to discuss it, one chapter a week, as a family. Yeah, its that good.

From the back of the book:

Do you ride the escalator-or take the stairs?
No matter how you define success, it always requires one thing: self-discipline. But as popular speaker and strategist Rory Vaden explains, we live in an "escalator world"-one that's filled with shortcuts, quick fixes, and distractions that make it all too easy to slide into procrastination, compromise, and mediocrity. What seems like an easier path is really much harder in the end-and, most important, it won't take you where you want to go.
How do successful people stay focused and achieve results? This lively and insightful guide presents a simple program for taking the stairs-that is, for overcoming the temptations of quick fixes and procrastination, conquering creative avoidance, and transcending personal setbacks in order to tackle the work that leads to real success.
Whatever your goals are, Rory Vaden's proven approach will get you there-one stair at a time.

The Secret of Secrets novella series - From Concept to BEST SELLER!!

In the fall of 2014 I attended a writing retreat in the mountains above Heber, Utah. I did a bunch of writing, made some great new friends, and took advantage of the opportunity to learn from others. Near the end of the conference, mention was made of a new anthology endeavor that was on the horizon.

At first I didn't think much of it. The idea of writing a novelette (a story about 1/3 the length of a typical novel) didn't really appeal to me. I tend to be a wordy writer - often having to edit out a serious amount of text from a typical manuscript to get it to an acceptable novel length. But I stewed on the idea. Could I do it? Would it be fun? Was it worth a try?

In the following days I went on a road trip where I introduced the idea to my hubby. Not knowing how serious to take it, we brainstormed some ideas. By the time we reached our destination we'd brainstormed a pretty decent outline for a story about an awkward, computer geek girl, with a seemingly boring job with the NSA.

After returning home from our trip, I pulled out my laptop and started writing. Before long Samantha Perry came to life. Within weeks I had written my complete novelette, HACKED. It was soon after accepted for publication by the Sweet and Sassy Anthology group for their "Secret Identities Collection".

But there was a hitch. There was more to Sam's story. And so, I kept writing.

As it turns out, writing within the guidelines of a shorter format was a great exercise for me. I needed to do this project more than I ever imagined. Not only did I love exploring Samantha's introverted, awkward, sassy character, but I learned so much about telling a story without a bazillion unnecessary words. I saw measurable improvement in my craft... and I fell in love with Samantha, the man she knew as Seth, the idea of halibut fishing (read the series and you'll understand), and some beautiful parts of the United States.

HACKED proceeded HUNTED, then shortly afterward HOOKED came to fruition. And all three books are now available on kindle and in paperback. They are short and sweet and sooooo much fun.

And the best part? Within days of its release, HACKED hit #2 on the best seller list. HUNTED and HOOKED followed suit with their releases. Apparently readers are really liking the fast paced, quick, in-and-out of a story they can read in a day! Wow, am I ever grateful that I took the challenge and brainstormed that first story.

Call to Arms; Nations Fall - by Randy Lindsay

Joining the military had seemed like the right thing to do, but when war breaks out in Europe Robert wonders if he

hasn’t made the biggest mistake of his life. The Russian juggernaut grinds its way toward Italy, the country Robert has grown to love. As one of a handful of American soldiers in the area, he must find a way to help the ragged remnants of NATO’s forces to prevent any more European nations from falling.

While back home, the rest of the Williams family struggles to protect themselves in the face of an impending civil war. The very fabric of society continues to unravel, threatening the destruction of the Constitution and the American way of life.

As Vice President, Calvin McCord continues to defy both sides of the political divide in order to find a solution to the war in Europe, the ravaging of the United States,
and an espionage ring within the White House.

Purchase your copy here:

RANDY LINDSAY is a native of Arizona. He lives in Mesa with his wife, five of his nine children, and a hyper-active imagination. His wife calls him the “Storyman” because he sees everything as material for a good story. Randy’s first novel, The Gathering: End’s Beginning, was published in 2014. He has also been published in several anthologies during 2013-2014. If you want to find out more you can check him out at RandyLindsay.net.

I haven't had a lot of time for what I like to call "recreational" reading lately, but when I heard that the follow up to Randy Lindsay's The Gathering; End's Beginning  was complete, I gave it high enough priority to neglect some other needful things and take a day to kick back and read.

And it was a day well spent.

Once I picked  Call to Arms up, I couldn't put it down. Page after riveting page, Lindsay didn't miss a beat. Picking up the stories of the Williams family and Secretary of State/Vice President Calvin McCord right were the first book left off, it was fun to discover how the lives and imposing events were so intertwined with each other. The world as we know it continues to fall apart in such a believable way it will leave readers with much to think about: Political debauchery, global unrest, indeterminable weather patterns, and the hearts of man growing colder and colder by the minute.

I am grateful I made time to read Call to Arms; Nations Fall and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves thought provoking entertainment subtly hidden in a smoothly written, easily believable story.

If you're interested in my review of The Gathering; End's Beginining, you can find it here. And don't forget to check out the fun interview I did with Randy a while back while you are at it.

My Name is Bryan - by Stacy Lynn Carroll

I met Stacy Lynn Carroll recently at a writer's retreat. We had a great time chatting about our families, our past projects and our current work. As soon as she told me about My Name is Bryan, I immediately knew I had to read it.

My Name is Bryan is a novel based on the true story of Bryan Carroll, Stacy's very own father in law, who in 1979 at the age of 18, took a jump that changed his life forever.

From the back cover:
If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too? Bryan chose to dive. Moments later, as he lay on the beach, unable to move his arms or legs, two questions ran through his mind: Would he walk again? And would he ever have kids? Based on the incredible true story of life, love, and never giving up.

Once I started reading Bryan's story, I could not put it down. It was both heart wrenching and heart warming. I cannot even imagine the grief that would come from going from a healthy, strong, active young man, to a quadriplegic in a matter of seconds. And yet, Bryan's story is not one of anger or bitterness, but instead one of hope and perseverance. As I read I kept finding myself trying to imagine what it must've been like to be in his shoes. And, with each new obstacle he faced, I was inspired by his positive attitude and humble perspective.

This is a great story for readers of all ages. It is available for kindle and in paperback on Amazon  and other online retailers.

About the Author:
Stacy Lynn Carroll has always loved telling stories. She started out at Utah State University where she pursued a degree in English. Go Aggies! She then finished her BA at the University of Utah (to be closer to her then boyfriend, now hubby) where she got an emphasis in creative writing. After college she worked as an administrative assistant, where she continued to write stories for the amusement of her co-workers. When her first daughter was born, and with the encouragement of a fortune cookie, she quit her job and became a full-time mommy and writer. It seemed like fate when Matt and Stacy married. She was a writer, and her father-in-law had a story that demanded to be written. She and her husband have three children, two Corgis, and a fish named Don. If you enjoyed this book, Stacy would love and appreciate your reviews on Amazon and Goodreads! She also loves to make new friends. "Memories of Me" by Laura Hedgecock

About the book:
We all have stories to share with our children and grandchildren. Whether it’s a proud moment, memories of grandparents, or a lesson you’ve learned, Memories of Me: A Complete Guide to Telling and Sharing the Stories of Your Life helps you put the episodes of your past onto paper and share them with loved ones.
Inside you’ll find:
• Simple, down-to-earth instructions to get you started
• Worksheets with in-depth brainstorming exercises to spark recall
• Plenty of examples to spark your creativity
• Writing advice to make your memories shine
Preserve your stories and share them with the important people in your life by using the tips and advice found in this comprehensive guide.

What I liked about the book:
When most people think about family history, they focus mostly on filling in the branches of their family tree. Names and dates are great, but I'm more of a story kind of girl. That is what I loved about this book. This is a book that will not only help you write your own history but it will help you compile those of your ancestors and family. And, what if your motivation is to simply make a record for your personal use? Well, that's okay too. As Hedgecock points out in the very first chapter, "You don't have to feel compelled to share your memories to be motivated to preserve them. You may want to preserve your stories while memory serves or while health still permits you to write and enjoy them. You might write to work through your feelings about your past, to reconnect yourself with your roots, process your grief at the loss of a loved one, or simply for the joy of writing."

Hedgecock has put together a very informative, step-by-step guide to help you preserve your memories. What I liked most was the worksheets that help get you moving in the right direction. She poses questions to get you thinking. For example:

  • Who are the most important people in your life?
  • Moments in which I felt especially proud... or I knew what I was doing mattered.
  • What was a typical happy moment?
  • What are memorable physical attributes of those in your family? What about situations or manners?

One of the highlights of the book are Hedgecock's personal stories. I love how she teaches a concept then shows you an example from her own life.

This is seriously a book I believe everyone should take the time to read. If you take it one chapter at a time, following the direction she gives, by the time you finish reading, you will be well on your way to having your history recorded.

"Warrior Everlasting" by Wendy Knight

Introducing Warrior Everlasting by Wendy Knight. Wendy is one of the fabulous authors I get to do Wonhundred Word Wednesdays with each week. She is also a very talented, bestselling author. Sadly, I haven't had the chance to read her new release Warrior Everlasting quite yet, but I have no doubt that it is a book you will want to read.

About the book: Warrior Everlasting

Fighting alongside the boy you shouldn't love is hard enough. Doing it while riding a unicorn who would gleefully fly to her death with you on her back is worse. What makes it insane?
Doing it in hell.

Scout and her unicorn, Ashra, risked everything just to make it into Aptavaras. Their plan is to free Scout’s family and the stolen souls, and seek vengeance on the man who took everything Ashra had once lived for.

What they hadn't counted on was Trey and his unicorn, Torz, following them.

It might be the only thing that will save them.

Because in Aptavaras, the soul stealers are many and the chances of survival are slim. Even if they can get past the demons, trick the demon master, rescue the souls and escape with their lives, there’s only one person who can open the gate, and he’s on the outside defending the world. But Scout, Trey, Ashra and Torz have one thing the soul stealers don’t—

A reason to live.

And here's a little Snippet to give  you a taste:

"You’re mad.”

She sighed. “I’m too tired for this right now, Trey. If you want Kylin, then—”

He glared at her. “You lose faith in me that quickly, Scout? I’ve been in love with you since I was eight years old. See these?” He held up his arm with the leather bands tied around his wrist. “Nine of them. One for each year I’ve loved you. I loved you when you hated me. I loved you when you were dancing for some other guy. I loved you when I watched you throw yourself off your unicorn eight billion feet above the ground.” Scout opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Instead, tears trickled down her cheek. Finally, she knew what those leather bands meant. And her heart swelled.

“Just because I talk to Kylin doesn’t mean I’m going back to her. What have I ever done to make you doubt me, Scout? And if you say the hospital—” His glare was more fierce than she’d ever seen it. Clearly, he’d heard enough about the hospital.

Scout smiled, scrubbing at her tears. “Nothing, Trey. You’ve done nothing to make me doubt you. I’m sorry. I’m just tired and insecure.”

His hand shot out, circling her waist, and he pulled her into him, so close she could feel his heart pounding inside his chest, and he kissed her like he would literally die if he didn’t. There was pain and fury and hope and love in that kiss. Scout rose on her toes and slid her arms around his neck, kissing him back, hoping he could feel that she felt the same way.
